Even the most ardent fans of Japanese whisky would be forgiven not to have heard of the Matsui distillery. Located in Tottori, a coastal prefecture on southern Honshu mostly known for its sand dunes. Matsui Shuzo is historically known in Japan as both a sake brewery and shochu distillery. While the juice in Kurayoshi is 100% malted barley, the spirits themselves have been sourced from distilleries around Scotland before making their journey to Japan, where they are blended with Japanese-distilled malted barley, then aged. The whisky is then proofed down with the famously soft ground waters of Tottori Prefecture. All expressions of Kurayoshi are non-chill filtered, with no caramel added.
Nose: Sweet oak and honey, with a hint of earthy peat.
Palate: Sherried malt comes through first with hints of smoke and notes of raisin and cinnamon, shortly followed by toasted nuts and vanilla pod.
Finish: Touches of fresh fruit sharpness and floral barley.

Matsui distillery is located in a landmark coastal area on South Honshu. Famous in Japan as a shochu distillery and sake brewery, the juices in this Kurayoshi bottle contains 100% malted barley with spirits sourced from distilleries around Scotland and then blended in Japan with distilled malted barley to be aged later, proofed down with ground waters of Tottori Prefecture. There is a refinery in a whisky you cannot miss, with notes of raisin, cinnamon, vanilla in sherried malt and fragrant barley.
